"We've got to start looking for the little nuggets."

Even though her three children, Paul Mescal, Donnacha and Nell, are all forging their own paths in life, she continues to stand by one piece of advice she believes is essential for them all.

During an appearance on The Claire Byrne Show on Newstalk, Dearbhla opened up about what her life looks like now in Maynooth, Co Kildare, since her children moved to London.

She went on to say that it was the little, mundane things in life that are the golden moments.

"We've got to start looking for the little nuggets, little nuggets of joy in the really, really ordinary and mundane.

"And one of the things that I remember at the time coming in from work was the shoes that were never put anywhere except at the front door… so you are nearly falling into your house."

However, it seems that these little things are what make life more memorable.

"We were all together at Christmas, and all our shoes were piled at the door, and I took a picture, and it just brought me right back to that moment where I'm kicking the shoes and yelling, 'Why haven't the clothes been put into the washing machine? And why aren't the dishes in the dishwasher?'"

So, even though Dearbhla's children are far away from home, she says there is always one thing that her children can count on, and that is advice from their mum.

When it comes to love, Dearbhla has told her children to choose wisely because "marriage is the hardest job I have ever done. And I would say to my children that you should know your partner well, because it is a partnership.

"It's two people. Finding joy in the complete polar opposite sometimes and then reconnecting is what it is all about."

She also reminds them that love is not always a 'bed of roses' and that there are plenty of thorns along the way.

"You've got to get through some really tough times together. As soon as you put a job in, you have to factor in money, a lack of money, and trying to navigate.

"If you are blessed with children, try to navigate motherhood or parenthood. And being on the same page. I was very lucky. We were pretty much always on the same page," she added.
