Boylan confirmed his resignation on the Pat Kenny show on Newstalk on Thursday morning.
Dr. Peter Boylan has confirmed that he has resigned from the board of the national maternity hospital.
Boylan, the former Master of Holles Street Hospital, has been an outspoken critic of plans to move the hospital to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, criticism which led to a request that he resign from the board.
In the interview with Pat Kenny on Newstalk on Thursday morning, Boylan confirmed that his resignation would be effective immediately.
In a statement obtained by Newstalk, Boylan said: "I can no longer remain a member of a board which is so blind to the consequences of its decision to transfer sole ownership of the hospital to the Religious Sisters of Charity, and so deaf to the disquiet of the public it serves.
“Hospitals on land owned by the Catholic Church are obliged to follow Catholic teaching and Canon Law on medical practices and procedures.”
The maternity hospital has been the source of much controversy and public discourse since it emerged that ownership of the hospital would be given to the Sisters of Charity in return for providing the site.
On Wednesday night, the board at Holles Street Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to plans to locate the new building at St. Vincent’s Hospital, while the Vincent’s board are due to discuss plans for the hospital on the campus on Thursday.
In a poll on Claire Byrne Live earlier this week, just 23% of 1,000 people polled said that they believed assurances given by the Minister for Health Simon Harris that the Catholic Church will have no influence in medical procedures at the planned new National Maternity Hospital in St Vincent's.
