The U.S. presidential elections have officially just been upstaged by bigger news; Toblerones have changed shape and people are NOT happy.
Judging by the angry individuals taking to social media to protest the changes, the message is clear – you can mess with world politics but do not mess with our chocolate. Mondelez International, the makers of the iconic, triangular Toblerone have widened the gaps between the bar’s chocolate segments. Despite some suggestions that the changes are a metaphor for Brexit, Mondelez claims that this is not the case.
#toblerone #brexit I told you that leaving the EU would have serious consequences. Now I’ m really upset. pic.twitter.com/w81cWYpNl4

The American company explained to BBC News that the controversial changes were simply a cost-reducing measure:
“Like many other companies, we are experiencing higher costs for numerous ingredients. We carry these costs for as long as possible, but to ensure Toblerone remains on-shelf, is affordable, and retains the triangular shape, we have had to reduce the weight [of the bars].”
A spokesperson clarified that the change “wasn’t done as a result of Brexit”. Good to know, but how are people coping with the changes? Some have suggested alternative uses for the reshaped Swiss favourite:
OKAY GUYS. Let’s try to look at this positively. The new #Toblerone would make such a lovely bookshelf… Right? pic.twitter.com/CD2EDqRsCz

While others feel that the negative backlash is making a mountain out of a molehill.
