A police officers in New Jersey is being recognised for his life-saving work after catching a 1-month-old baby who was thrown from the second story of a building.

The details of the disturbance are unclear, but a male was seen threatening to throw a newborn from the second story of a building.

Seeing the danger the infant was in, the officers set up a perimeter before trying to negotiate with the man in question, when they arrived at the scene.

The man followed through on his threat but, incredibly, the baby was unharmed when Eduardo Matute managed to catch the infant.

The City Mayor Steven Fulop praised the officer saying: “Today, the JCPD got a call that a child was in danger, they responded to the call and at that point they saw a male threatening to throw a baby from the 2nd story of the building. The officers at the scene reacted quickly and were able to catch the baby.

“We are lucky to have the men and woman of the JCPD, as every single day I see it firsthand they rise to meet any/all challenges.

A photo of Officer Eduardo Matute cradling the newborn after the fact was recently shared on Instagram.

Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said on Twitter: “We especially want to acknowledge the actions and bravery of the negotiator and first-responding PO Joseph Casey, South District PO Eduardo Matute who safely caught the baby after being dropped from a 2nd floor balcony and Incident Commander Capt Michael McKerrym. Thank you, Officers!”

The baby was brought straight to hospital but later discharged and is doing well, the New York Post reported.
