A policewoman in Colombia is being praised for saving the life of an abandoned baby girl by breastfeeding her. Luisa Urrea was called out after a group of locals found a newborn in the undergrowth of a remote forest. According to The Mirror, she breastfed the little one - who was only a matter of hours old at the time and still had part of her umbilical cord attached - until the paramedics arrived. Doctors said that had Ms Urrea not done what she did, chances are the child would have succumbed to starvation or hypothermia.

Speaking about her actions, she said: “I’m a new mother and I have milk and I recognised the needs that this poor little creature had. “I think any woman would have given her nourishment in the same circumstances.” The infant was suffering from hypothermia and had several lacerations when she was found but is now said to be in good health. The Colombian Institute of Family Welfare will take care of the baby until a home is found for her. Police are currently searching for her birth mother.
