Pret A Manger to change food allergy labelling following death of 15-year-old girl

Pret A Manger are changing their allergy labelling on all of their food products following the death of a 15-year-old girl.

Natasha Ednan-Laperouse went into cardiac arrest on a flight two years ago after eating a sandwich she had bought in Heathrow airport.

The teenager had an allergic reaction to sesame seeds that were baked into the baguette.

An inquest last week heard that Natasha had been “reassured” by the lack of allergen information on the sandwich packet.

BBC reports that Pret A Manger will now list all of their ingredients on fresh made products.

The UK sandwich shop chain’s chief executive Clive Schlee has said that the company is “deeply sorry” and that he hoped the incident would “drive change.”

He said:

“I said we would learn from this tragedy and ensure meaningful changes happen.

“I hope these measures set us on course to drive change in the industry so people with allergies are as protected and informed as possible. Nothing is more important to Pret right now.”

Earlier this week, Natasha’s father, Nadim Ednan-Laperouse, told BBC Radio 4 that his daughter would have support the campaign to have all ingredients listed on food packaging.

He said:

“At Natasha’s funeral, in front of 500 people, I promised that we would get justice for her death, justice for the future that no one else should suffer such a needless and pointless death.

“She would be in heaven looking down and saying, ‘Yes, yes to daddy, yes to mummy, please make these changes go through. It’s so important that others don’t die or have terrible life-threatening injuries as a result of something so simple, so simple.’”

Full ingredient list trails will begin in Pret A Manger next month and will be rolled out to all UK outlets soon.
