Irish principals are calling for more Physical Education in schools as a solution to the growing obesity problem.

The Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN) believe that children would benefit from two hours of PE each week. The proposal will be discussed at the organisation’s annual two-day conference, which kicks off today at the Citywest Hotel & Convention Centre in Dublin.

According to a recent survey of primary school principals, 85% are in favour of devoting extra time to exercise. The majority of principals also believe that school facilities should be updated to accommodate PE sessions during bad weather.

One in four Irish children is overweight or obese with one in 50 categorised as morbidly obese. Overweight children are more likely to suffer from asthma, diabetes, certain cancers and heart problems, as well as bullying and stigmatisation.

IPPN President Brendan McCabe says doubling the time currently allocated to exercise in schools would also benefit children in other ways:

“Mental health and wellbeing for children is a very serious issue, that is not getting as much attention as it should,” he said.
