Probe launched after another newborn dies at Cavan Hospital

An investigation has been launched at Cavan General Hospital after the death of a newborn baby on Tuesday afternoon.

The hospital previously faced questions over the standards of care provided to patients after it was revealed that three infants died there between 2012 and 2014, two within four weeks of each other.

The HSE has confirmed the baby died on the hospital’s maternity ward yesterday and said a full review would take place “as is normal practice”.

A statement read: “Cavan and Monaghan Hospital management would like to offer its deepest sympathy to the family on their tragic loss and hope they will be given the privacy that they need to deal with their grief,”

In March the HSE admitted that a warning system established following the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar is not being run effectively in the majority of Irish maternity hospitals.

A report on compliance in hospitals including CUMH, the Rotunda, The Coombe and Cavan General stated that “Excluding the Rotunda, the audit team found deficits in all hospitals in relation to the completion of repeat observations within the recommended timeframes following a trigger.”
