Irish star Roz Purcell has made it clear where she stands regarding a certain popular wedding custom, and she didn't hold back when sharing her opinion online.
The 35-year-old model, who is set to marry her longtime partner Zach Desmond, has said she’s not a fan of the tradition that expects wedding guests to bring gifts.
Roz took to her social media to share her somewhat 'controversial' take on the wedding custom, captioning the video: "2026 brides don’t come for me. But like, what’s the going rate for a couple these days? It’s gone mental.
"I feel organising a wedding now, I see how much you’re asking people to do just to attend your day."
She started off the video by saying: "Maybe some people will be mad about [this], but as a 2026 bride, I'm gonna say it."
"People should not have to get you gifts. The gift of going to your wedding is enough," Roz firmly states.
She went on to explain: "The cost of a hotel, especially if it's a bougie hotel, maybe childminders, dogminders, getting a new outfit, renting an outfit, taking time off work, that's loads of money.
"I think weddings... they've lost the plot. Like, what's the going rate for a couple of cards now, like 150 to 250, I've heard even three [hundred euros].
"When someone's getting married, they're deciding to have a financial burden because everything to do with a wedding is very expensive," Roz continued, "But the people you've invited to come and celebrate your day of love. You're expecting a lot. That's what I'm saying."
While she does admit that she also 'sticks some cash' in the card when she attends weddings, she believes that people should bring back the tradition of a couple's registry in the case they're hoping for presents.
"I think bring back the old registry where you could go onto a couple's registry, and you could pick a gift from €10 to way up... thousands if you wanted, because you're expecting a lot."
Despite popular belief, a lot of her fans were quick to agree with her in the comment section, with one person writing: "And if you go solo - can't get half a hotel room or half a gift."
"And then when you’re single, and everything feels like it costs double (the room, the gift)," another added.
A fellow 2026 bride also jokingly gave her two cents, writing: "A possible bride of 2026. It’s controversial to have a wedding! We might skip it and send postcards."
Roz and Zach are set to tie the knot later this year.
Zach is the son of millionaires Denis Desmond and Caroline Downey, with Denis best known as the owner of MCD Productions, the music powerhouse behind the majority of major concerts in Ireland. He founded the company in 1980 alongside Eamonn McCann.
So, it's safe to say that for guests attending Roz and Zach’s wedding, there’s no need to stress about bringing a gift.
