Katie Mythen-Lynch

Belgian media is reporting further explosions at a metro station in near the European Union headquarters in Brussels.

Less than an hour after twin explosions killed a number of people at Brussels Zavantem Airport, all Metro stations have now been closed as thousands of people are evacuated from the area surrounding the Maelbeek Metro station.

Unconfirmed reports suggest there may have been as many as four separate explosions on the metro line, as video shared on Twitter shows passengers exiting carriages in the darkened tunnels and walking along the tracks to safety.

Meanwhile Belgium’s interior minister has raised the nation’s terror threat to the highest level following the attacks, which occur just four days after Paris attacks terror suspect Salah Abdeslam was hunted down by police in Brussels.
