This simple gesture in response to a harrowing scandal is so touching you can’t not cry

Amanda Cassidy

It just started with one person.

Mary Jo Meehan Ryan.

She posted her moving plan on Facebook on Wednesday and what follows is simply beautiful.

“I am thinking of the 796 babies who died in Tuam without any funeral or coffin or blessings. I have an idea, but I need some help. I will a light a candle in my home on Friday night and I would like all my friends who see this to also light a candle in their homes this Friday night. If you all share this with your friends and your friends share it also. Maybe we could get 796 or 800 candles lighting for the babies who died. A small gesture for their suffering.”

And her idea touched others and this was the result – thousands of people from Ireland to Canada, the UK, America and New Zealand sending pictures of their lit candles in memory of the babies and mums that were mistreated in Tuam. So that they know they are not alone.

For the little ones with no names – who won’t be forgotten.
