Smile: Today is the happiest day of the year

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Bright evenings, warm weather and the promise of holidays combine to make today the happiest day of the year, according to psychologists.

The third Friday in June is when we are feeling our most optimistic about the future, with childhood memories of summer, heightened social interaction and blooming plants and flowers all contributing to the good vibes.

Dr Cliff Arnall analysed the happiest dates on the calendar using the mathematical formula O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He (outdoors  plus nature  multiplied by social interaction plus childhood memories and positive thoughts (Cpm) divided by temperature, then added to holiday excitement).

Conversely, the most depressing day of the year is the third Monday in January, which, thankfully, is a long way off.
