Snow and temperatures as low as -4 on the way as freezing start to 2021 continues

Conor Heneghan

It’s been a cold start to 2021 and it’s about to get even colder.

Met Éireann has forecast showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow and temperatures as low as -4 degrees in the coming days, with no end to the bitter start to 2021 in sight for the foreseeable future.

This week will start off very cold nationwide, with widespread severe frost and ice expected and temperatures set to drop to as low as -4 degrees on Monday night.

The coldest conditions are expected in Connacht and Ulster, but wintry showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow are most likely to affect Leinster and Munster.

Little change in the weather is expected throughout the week, with daytime temperatures barely exceeding 4 degrees and a welcome forecast for plenty of dry and sunny spells.

Wintry showers of rain, sleet and snow will continue throughout the week, however, affecting the eastern half of Leinster on Tuesday, the northwest of the country on Wednesday and Connacht and Ulster on Thursday.

Temperatures are set to drop to below freezing every night, leading to severe frost and icy conditions nationwide and the need for caution to be exerted on untreated roads on surfaces.

Met Éireann anticipates that the weekend will remain cold and dry, but that somewhat cloudier conditions will lead to spells of patchy rain in places, as well as a slight increase in temperatures to highs of 7 and 8 degrees during daylight hours.
