Yes, you read that right.

A snow-ice weather warning for the whole of the country has been put into place by Met Éireann ahead of the arrival of sleet and snow over the rest of the week.

The status yellow caution forecasts scattered heavy thundery showers on Wednesday and into Thursday.

Rain will occasionally turn into sleet, and possibly snow, with accumulations of less than 3cm possible.

According to the weather warning, areas in the northwest will be most at risk.

There will be slippery roads and paths due to frost and ice, particularly in sheltered spots.

The status yellow warning is in place from 11am on Wednesday until 8pm on Thursday.

It’s the second weather warning to be issued on Tuesday, after a yellow wind warning was put in place for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

The warning will come into effect at noon on December 13 and end at 10pm on Thursday, December 14.

Met Eireann are forecasting that west to southwest winds veering west to northwest will result in average speeds of 45 to 65 km/h, with gust up to 85 km/h.

Winds will be strongest in the western areas.

Wednesday will be a cold, windy and very showery day. The rainfall will be widespread, with some falling as hail or sleet.

There will be a few bright spells – but it’ll still be very cold.

With an added wind chill effect, maximum temperatures will reach 4C or 5C. It will reach 7C or 8C along the southern fringes.

It’ll be very windy with some clear spells overnight, although there will be scattered showers (some of them wintry), especially over high ground.

Temperatures will reach a minimum off 0C to 4C, with slight frost in some areas.

Meanwhile, Thursday will be cold and very windy with a mix of sunny spells and showers.

Some of the rain will be heavy, or may fall as hail, with a continuing risk of thunder.

Wintry showers of sleet are likely, with a risk of hill snow, and maximum temperatures of 4C to 8C.

It’ll be a cold, frosty night with icy patches – especially in the midlands, east and north.
