Doing this on your wedding day makes you more likely to get divorced
Can't win, can you?
Lots of things cause couples to want to divorce.
Infidelity is one. Deciding you hate your kids is another. And the realisation that you'll never be able to ethically share a bed with another person in a romantic setting because you've locked yourself down to someone else who you only kind of like is another.
Probably the most common reason that one, there.
As it turns out though, there's another thing that points to divorce and that's spending a load of money on your wedding.
Splashing the cash on the big day isn't so much a cause of splitting up, but more so a feature of couples who tend to get divorced the most.
According to a new study conducted by economics professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M Mialon, the more you spend on your wedding, the more likely you are to divorce.
The Independent reports they discovered that couples who drop more than €16,500 on a wedding were 1.6 times more likely to divorce than those who spent about €1,000.
Very interesting, indeed.
Similarly, men who spent about €3,000 on an engagement ring were 1.3 times more likely to legally split than those who spent a lot less.
There are a few reasons why this might happen too.
The first is that rich people are more likely to be unhappy and divorce which, you know, might be a thing.
But the second, more likely, scenario is that due to the cost of divorce itself, maybe who people who aren't spending a lot on weddings simply don't have the money for a divorce.
As well as this, if you get married later in life or married a second time, you probably won't spend as much money on the ceremony.
And it's these marriages that are more likely to last.
