Ireland set for a rough midweek spell

Anyone travelling around Ireland this week may want to prepare for a spell of wet and windy weather, with Met Éireann issuing yellow warnings for seven counties between Wednesday and Thursday.

The alerts will come into effect at different times, with strong winds expected first before heavy rain moves across several parts of the country.

Forecasters have warned of potential flooding, hazardous coastal conditions and fallen branches, all of which could cause problems for motorists.

More weather alerts possible as conditions deteriorate

The first alert applies to Donegal, Galway and Mayo, where a yellow wind warning will run from 6am to 6pm on Wednesday, 14 October.

Strong gusts could bring down trees and branches, while waves may spill over exposed coastal areas.

Rain warnings will follow that evening. Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo are covered from 6pm on Wednesday until 6am on Thursday, 15 October, as periods of heavy rainfall could cause localised flooding.

Clare and Kerry will then come under a separate yellow rain warning from midnight until noon on Thursday.

With the weather expected to deteriorate at different points across the affected counties, drivers should check conditions before setting off and be prepared for possible delays.

Met Éireann outlined all three alerts in a post on X, confirming the counties and times covered.

The forecaster is keeping watch on the developing system, while RTÉ reports that further announcements will be made if any of the warnings are changed or extended.
