Storm Barney recedes, but now there’s snow on the way

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Earlier this week we brought you news of a white Christmas, but now it seems the snow is on the way a little earlier than expected.

As  winds of up to 110kph and power cuts cause havoc all over the country, Met Éireann is forecasting a drop in temperature to just 4C by Saturday, with snow in Ulster and Connacht on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile ESB crews scrambled to fix more than 400 faults yesterday, with many communities enduring power outages following the damage cause by Storm Barney and heavy rain and debris causing headaches for motorists.

It will be cool and breezy today, with rain over the southern half of the country clearing eastwards for a time this morning, but there’s a cold night ahead with lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees and patchy frost in some midland areas.
