Storm Desmond keeps on raging: Red Alert weather warning remains

Sive O'Brien

Over 2,000 homes are without electricity today after Storm Desmond hit yesterday and continues to rage through the country. The bad news is, we’re still on a rare red weather warning from Met Éireann.

Motorists have been advised to be super-careful as 120km gale-force winds lash through the country. All Ferries have been cancelled, and flights are delayed, with some taking off (though lots of people tweeting from airplanes stuck on runways).

And we’re sad to say, it’s due to continue today with some extremely wet and windy conditions expected, especially in the North and Northwest where prolonged and heavy rain is likely to lead to road closures and dangerous flooding.

But it’s not all bad – promise – southeastern and eastern counties will be happy to hear that rain will become lighter as the day continues, even intermittent at times.

This is what’s going on across the country this morning, folks:

Anyone seen Ireland?

 Careful out there now

Don’t drive unless you have to in some areas

Please exercise caution on the roads this morning, high winds, heavy rain and standing water continue to make driving conditions challenging
