You’d think the five-a-day mantra for healthy eating would be firmly established in the average psyche by now, but a new study suggests that not everyone really understands what it means.

A Fruit Heroes survey of 1,000 parents has revealed that one in 20 parents believe a packet of crisps counts as one of their child’s five a day.

One in four parents wrongly believed a baked potato counted as one of the five recommended portions of fruit and vegetables, while one in nine mums and dads thinks a vitamin supplement counts as one of the five a day.

An astonishing one in ten parents said they didn’t think fruit was a healthy snack for children.
