“She looked to be in good health”

A girl has been found alive 248 hours following the 7.8 magnitude Turkey-Syria earthquake.

The 17-year-old has been named as Aleyna Olmez.

Rescuers found her under the rumble as they continue to search for survivors following the devastating earthquake.

Speaking to AFP about the rescue mission, one member of the team said finding anyone alive is a miracle.

They said the girl is doing well considering she was trapped for days.

“She looked to be in good health. She opened and closed her eyes,” they shared.

“We have been working here in this building for a week now…”

He added, “We came here with the hope of hearing sounds.”

The rescuers said they are happy when they find any living thing “even a cat”.

The girl’s uncle said he will never forget what the rescuers did for his niece.

The public has been asked to continue supporting organisations helping with the recovery.

There are multiple Irish organisations that are supporting those affected by the devastation in both Turkey and Syria.

Dóchas CEO, Jane-Ann McKenna said people need essential items urgently.

People need basic supplies like food, water, and clothes following the deadly earthquake.

“Temperatures in the region are below zero overnight. People are still trapped, and many have been left without shelter.”

People also need blankets, hygiene and sanitary products, and medical items.
