Teen convicted after Howth Junction incident won’t go to jail

Laura Cunningham

The 17-year-old has been released on probation

A youth involved in the antisocial behaviour which led to a teenage girl being knocked under a train last year, has been spared a custodial sentence.

CCTV footage of the incident shocked viewers who watched the girl fall into the gap between a Dart and the platform at Howth Junction train station in north county Dublin. The youth, who was charged with assault causing harm, as well as violent disorder was seen knocking her off the platform. She was quickly helped by passers-by who pulled her to safety.

The 17-year-old has been released on six months probation, according to the Irish Times. Two other youths, also aged 17 were charged with violent disorder as they had “peripheral roles” in the disorder. They pleaded not guilty, but were convicted earlier this month.
