Gardaí arrest man in connection with attack on teen girl in Fermoy

Gardaí in Fermoy, Co. Cork are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a teenage girl.

It is understood a 16-year-old girl was attacked by two older men when she was out walking.

The attack took place on Monday, February 7th at 1.20 pm.

The young girl was rushed to hospital in Cork, but thankfully her injuries are not serious.

She was walking a short distance from the town centre when they targeted her.

According to reports, Gardaí believe there was a “sexual motivation” behind the attack.

Luckily, two youths heard the teenager calling for help and intervened.

They helped the girl escape the attackers, but were then assaulted by the two older men.

However, the two attackers fled the scene on foot.

It is understood one of the youths was cut with a bottle. One of the boys was also taken to hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be serious.

It is understood the young girl is local. She is reportedly in a state of shock and traumatised after the horrifying incident.

Gardaí have since arrested a man in his 30s in relation to the serious attack.

“Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault that occurred in Fermoy, Co Cork.”

“A man in his 30s has been arrested in relation to this incident. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Fermoy garda station.

“Investigations are ongoing.”
