Tesco has recalled a butter product over fears that it could contain dangerous bacteria.

The supermarket chain confirmed the news, which stems from a possible contamination issue at a factory in Westmeath, to JOE.ie.

A spokesperson said: “We have recalled our Tesco roast garlic and herb butter log 100g after a potential low level Listeria Monocytogenes contamination issue was discovered at the factory in Westmeath where the product is produced.”

“Whilst we have no evidence to suggest these Tesco products have been contaminated, we have recalled the product as a precautionary measure. We are asking customers who have purchased affected products to return it to store for a full refund.”

It is feared that the products could contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria known to cause food poisoning in pregnant women and other vulnerable groups.

Listeriosis can cause vomiting and diarrhoea however it can be more severe in some cases, leading to serious conditions such as meningitis.
