The Donegal postman’s August forecast is in – and it’s looking good

Famous Donegal postman Michael Gallagher claims we still have a few weeks of summer to look forward to. Michael Gallagher, a retired An Post worker from Glenfin who predicts the weather based on signs he sees in nature, reckons we needn't be too worried about the current dreary spell as better days are to come. "The summer is not over yet, there is still a couple of weeks of sunshine left," he told RSVP this week. "The weather won't change much from the sunshine, you might get the odd shower, but I can see lots of good days before the end of August." Michael, who looks to the behaviour of animals and plants to forecast the weather, has had success with his methods a number of times in the past. Speaking on-air to RedFM host Neil Prendeville this spring, he correctly predicted that Ireland was in for a good summer from May onwards. Meanwhile, Met Éireann is forecasting sunshine and warm temperatures for the long weekend. While today will see scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle at first, the weather will become drier through the day and the cloud will become more broken with occasional sunshine later on. Saturday is predicted to be generally dry and bright with highs of 19 to 22 degrees. Sunday is set to be much the same with highs of 19 to 25 degrees forecast and the best of the sunshine and temperatures in Munster and Leinster.
