This best man’s controversial speech caused MAJOR drama

Cathy Donohue

Can you IMAGINE?!

We’ve heard some off-the-wall wedding tales before, remember the bride who put together a list of ridiculous rules for her bridesmaids and the couple who charged their wedding guests for hot drinks, BUT this might be the most shocking story yet.

When it comes to choosing your wedding party, people tend to ask the people closest to them, be they family or friends, to act as best man and bridesmaids.

The usual practice is for the best man to give a speech and sometimes use it as an opportunity to poke fun at the groom while congratulating the happy couple of course, but in this particular situation, things veered away from tradition.

In a letter penned to Slate’s advice column ‘Dear Prudence’, one bride explained how the best man managed to make the speech all about him and his partner when he made a special announcement regarding their future.

Yes, that actually happened.

Below is an excerpt from said letter and you can read the full thing here.

“My husband’s best friend, “John,” was the best man/officiant. The setting was beautiful, everyone seemed happy, our families were overjoyed. My mom may have used the phrase hallelujah a few dozen times. The entire atmosphere felt moving. So moving in fact that John stopped mid-ceremony to propose to his longtime girlfriend, “Jane,” and reveal her pregnancy.

“I couldn’t even hear the vows my husband wrote or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane’s happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her.

“Even the videographer cut to her frequently during the ceremony, and you can’t hear anything over the chatter. When John gave his toast, he apologized for being caught up in the moment, and then proceeded to talk about he and Jane’s future with nary a mention of us”.

Unsurprisingly, this piece has gone massively viral in recent days and there are varying opinions on the matter.
