Wow, for such a small country, we sure do make an impact across the globe.
Not only is St Patrick’s Day one of the world’s biggest celebrations across the world every year, where Irishness is lauded and our tiny little Island and all that is great about us becomes the focus across the world, but this weekend, we hit the global headlines once again, and it’s not for our love of alcohols, music and the written word, it’s simply for love.
The historic Marriage Referendum has hit the global headlines, making the front pages of almost every major broadsheet.
We’re a small nation with big hearts.
Despite the majority of the country being brought up in a Catholic religious dogma who still forbid homosexuality and in a society that only decriminalised gay sex in 1993 (you read that right), and where clerical abuse secrets are still kept, and where 90 per cent of our schools are still run by the church – the nation has had their say.
Our values won’t be dictated to by the church. We can still be spiritual and Christian without adhering to ancient beliefs.
Our minds have broadened and despite the greed and injustice in Ireland that still prevails, our rights, openness and beliefs in equality will not be challenged.Â
This is our time now; time for a more equal, progressive future for our children where inclusion is the norm. The world is watching us.Â
