A woman who became lost during a run through a forest said she survived by drinking her own breast milk.
Susan O’Brien was terrified she was going to die after getting lost during a 12.5 mile half marathon though Rimutaka Forest Park in Wellington, New Zealand.
The 29-year-old mother of two, who was wearing only light running clothes, was forced to get creative as temperatures dropped and the rain and winds worsened overnight. Having dug a hole in the forest floor, she covered herself in earth to stay warm:
“I just kept chucking dirt on top of me and every time I heard something I’d just scream ‘help’,” she told reporters.
“One thing that helped me, I’m breastfeeding my baby, so I had a bit of my milk because I thought that would help me keep going for energy.”
A helicopter using heat-detecting sensors found O’Brien this morning and reunited her with husband Daniel, two-year-old son Jayden and daughter Meisha, eight months.
