The composer behind some of the biggest movie soundtracks in recent memory, including Braveheart and Titanic, has died in a plane crash in Southern California.

American composer and conductor James Horner, 61, was killed when his light aircraft crashed in the Los Padres National Forest. Though the crash victim was not immediately identified, Horner’s attorney said, “we know it’s his plane, and we know we haven’t heard from him.”

Horner’s assistant, Sylvia Patrycja, later confirmed the tragic news. His family, including wife, Sarah and two daughters, have asked the media to respect their privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

James Horner’s score for Titanic, including the Celine Dion hit My Heart Will Go On, won him two Oscars and is the best selling orchestral film soundtrack of all time. He also scooped two Grammys and two Golden Globes during his career. Sources say he was working on both sequels to James Cameron’s Avatar before he died.
