‘Daycare didn’t know where my son was – am I overreacting?’

Anna Martin

When you drop your child off at daycare you expect to see them there when you get back.

Can you imagine how you would react if you arrived back to collect them and the teachers didn’t know where they were?

Or even worse, they tell you they had already been collected?

For one mother, exactly this happened and she wanted to know did she overreacted in the situation.

Taking to Reddit to vent, the mystery woman wrote: “When I went to pick my son up from daycare yesterday afternoon they told me he had already been picked up.

“I looked at both of the teachers in his room and said, ‘No he has not’, they both looked at each other and said ‘He must be with the other teacher in one of the other rooms’ but not actually knowing where my son was.”

Instead of going to look for the boy themselves, they sent the worried mother to go check two different rooms herself.

“He wasn’t in the first one but he was in the second one,” the Redditor wrote.

“And then I had to point him out to the teacher he was with because they didn’t know who he was.”

The woman wanted to know if she was wrong for being so upset with the situation or if her emotions were justified.

“I know it would have been much worse if he wasn’t there, but the fact that the two teachers in his classroom didn’t know where he was is very concerning to me,” she added.

“This is also a school that doesn’t require me to sign out my child when I pick him up. I just have to enter a code and go to his room and off we go.”

She concluded her post by inviting people to give their opinions and of course, they didn’t let her down.

“Why was he in a different room? Did he wander over on his own? Who was watching him? What’s the teacher-to-child ratio? I’d be concerned,” penned one.

Another commented: “That doesn’t sound like a very competent centre. At the very least, they should be able to recognize him. That’s the bare minimum. But their actual job is to know where each child is. So they failed at that.”

“That doesn’t sound safe. The teachers should know where all their kids are, it’s super important. There is clearly a safety issue at this daycare,” a third added.
