A mum has attracted criticism online after sharing a controversial parenting “hack” that many say unfairly exploits retail workers.
In a now-deleted TikTok video, the mum-of-one explained her approach, which has been reposted and criticised by another TikTok user, @unpluggedmoments.
The video showed the mother allowing her daughter to pick up multiple items while shopping, only to choose a few to actually purchase at the till.
She then asks employees to return the unwanted items to the shelves.
In the reposted video, @unpluggedmoments summarised the situation, saying: “Apparently, she lets her daughter go into the store and pick out whatever she wants, but when they get to the register, she only buys a couple of items and asks the employee to put the rest back.”

The mother faced significant backlash, with many people calling her out for placing an unnecessary burden on shop staff.
Some pointed out that retail employees are often already stretched thin, especially in understaffed locations.
In response to the criticism, the mother reportedly posted a follow-up video defending her actions.
“I don’t understand why people think they’re entitled to just stand around at their jobs,” she said, claiming that it’s within an employee’s duties to help customers, whether that involves restocking items or assisting at the cash register.
She argued: “When I ask an employee if they’re willing to help put the items back, they’re usually nice and say, ‘Yes, of course.’ But two, that is also their job. They’re not there to just stand around.”
However, the response from TikTok users remained largely negative.
@unpluggedmoments, the user who reposted the original clip, pushed back on the mom’s defense and asked: “What do you expect employees to say to you?”
She urged viewers to show more respect for retail workers, likening the situation to sitting down in a restaurant, unwrapping the table settings, and then deciding not to stay.
Many commenters echoed this, highlighting the challenges faced by retail employees.
