Norah Casey has shared her frightening domestic abuse story

The businesswoman opened up about an abusive relationship in her past.

Norah Casey was the final guest on the last Late Late Show of the season, and her story about her experience of being domestically abused was both frightening and highly courageous.

Casey spoke about a relationship with a man called Peter in her 20s, when she was working in London.

She told host Ryan Tubridy about how he was outwardly a very charismatic person and they married.

However, over the cycle of abuse and apology, Casey began to spend as much time at work as she could to avoid returning home to her husband.

“I can’t tell you over the years how your self-esteem goes through the floor. I was the original five to niner; I was leaving as early as possible for work and staying as long as possible to avoid going home.”

She told Tubridy how she would cry on her way to work on Mondays, having failed to leave her abusive husband over the weekend.

“In my head, I was leaving all the time. Every Friday I came home from work and said [to herself] I was leaving. Every Monday I cried on the way into work in despair, saying why didn’t I leave him.”

One incident in particular, in which she was threatened with a knife, was particularly chilling.

Casey revealed that she was bringing her story to the public to show that people can move on from such abusive relationships.

“We are the first generation to share our testimony. All those brave people who talked in the Yes campaign, people who talked about child sexual abuse, about alcoholism, about addiction. If we take our secrets to the grave, we are not passing anything on humanity, to the next generation,” she said.
