Watch: Heroes pull baby and toddler from overturned car

Alison Bough

A number of heroic motorists saved a toddler and baby from a vehicle overturned in floodwaters after tornadoes hit the US State of Texas on Saturday.

Extreme weather conditions in Texas over the weekend, that left four people dead and more than fifty people injured, caused a family SUV to overturn in floodwaters – with a father, toddler, and baby trapped inside the vehicle.

Local news station WFAA reports that some fast-thinking passersby came to the family’s rescue. A local man, Tom Mitchell, who took the footage of the harrowing events, then performed life-saving CPR on the infant. He told the news station that the water was moving so fast that rescuers couldn’t get the doors open.

The harrowing video footage shows five or six people in the water struggling to free the occupants. Mr Mitchell told reporters that the baby was limp and blue-ish grey,

“[The child had] no colour at all and the eyes were not focused when I looked down at her.”

Thankfully, the toddler was also revived at the scene. Tom Mitchell commented on the traumatic turn of events,

“I think it shows how the community and strangers all come together.”

The father of the children took to social media on Sunday to say that both he and his baby son are doing well. He also provided an update on his toddler daughter:

“Update on Addy bug, she is stable and doing much better. Still under sedation but pulling the breathing tube in the morning to see if she can do it on her own.”
