WATCH: Police officer pulls over speeding car and finds a woman inside giving birth

Sive O'Brien

When an officer pulled over a car for running red lights and speeding down a street in Seattle on Sunday morning, he didn’t expect to find woman in the passenger seat about to give birth.

As Officer Anthony Reynolds approached the vehicle, a man jumped out of the driver’s side shouting that his wife was in labour. He was on his way to the hospital and thought he could still make it in time, but Officer Reynolds called an ambulance. The baby, however, had other ideas (as babies tend to do) and was born on the side of the road before paramedics arrived.

The drama didn’t end there, though. “After first giving a full-throated cry as she burst into the world, the young girl began struggling to breathe,” the Seattle Police Department said on its official blog. “With the help of the child’s mother, Officer Reynolds cleared the baby’s airway and got her breathing again.”

When the ambulance arrived, the mum and baby – the couple’s fourth child – were taken to hospital in a stable condition. According to the police department, the family are doing well and even sent officers a thank you note, saying, “You have helped deliver a precious gift. We are so grateful.”

The video below shows the incredible footage. It’s nail-biting stuff, but thankfully all ended well.
