A yellow rainfall warning has been issued for seven counties, as Met Eireann forecasters caution that spot flooding is “likely”.
The weather alert was put into place for Munster and Galway on Wednesday morning.
It comes into effect at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon and lasts for 12 hours, finishing up at Thursday morning at 4am.
The caution warns that showers will merge to longer spells of thundery rain, with surface water and spot flooding likely.
Forecasters say that between 25 to 40 mm is possible in the areas.
While the rain will clear overnight, some mist and fog will set in – as well as frost and icy stretches and slack winds.
It will be another cold night tonight, with temperatures ranging from -1C to 3C in some areas of the country.
Thursday morning will also start off chill, with the frost clearing but some fog lingering.
It will be mostly dry across the country, with some residual showers in the early hours of the morning.
While there will be some bright or sunny spells, a “good deal of cloud” is also forecast.
