A weather warning has been put in place for the whole country.
The yellow wind warning will begin at 5pm on Tuesday January 2 and will stay in place until 9pm on Wednesday January 3.
It cautions that west to southwest winds with average speeds of 55 to 65 km/h, gusting to 90 to 110 km/h, will begin to develop on Tuesday evening.
The winds will continue through Tuesday night and Wednesday, with a potential for even stronger winds developing locally or for a time on Tuesday evening, with damaging gusts.
Met Eireann forecasters warn that there will be very high seas along the Atlantic coasts, with the risk of coastal flooding.
Tuesday is forecast to be cloudy and wet as the day begins, with outbreaks of rain which will clear eastwards during the morning.
But more showers will extend from the Atlantic during the afternoon, turning heavy in a number of areas with a risk of thunder.
Winds will be moderate to fresh south-westerly for the most part, with strong west to southwest winds developing in the ending and a risk of extremely windy conditions.
Maximum temperatures will reach between 8C and 13C.
The strong winds will continue overnight, reaching gale force along western coasts.
There will be a number of showers along the western coastal areas, with temperatures dropping to between 3C and 5C.
