The recall was issued this afternoon.

Whirlpool have recalled 11,000 Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines in Ireland over fire safety risks.

The manufacturer issued the recall today over concerns that a flaw in the door-locking system could lead to the machines overheating and catching fire.

It is thought that over 500,000 washing machines in the UK could be affected.

The machines affected in Ireland were manufactured between October 2014 and February 2018.

Whirlpool have said that their own branded washing machines are not included in the recall.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and concern this may cause to our customers, particularly over the Christmas period, but we hope people will understand that we are taking action because people’s safety is our top priority,” said Whirlpool vice president Jeff Noel.

“Preparing for a recall of this scale is a complex operation and we are working tirelessly to ensure we are ready to start offering replacements or repairs to our customers from early January.”

Concerned customers can call 0818 903 281 to see if their machine is affected, or visit the Whirlpool safety notice site here.

The model number and the serial number of the appliance can be found inside of the door, or on the back of the washing machine.
