A woman in her 20s was brought to hospital after being attacked by someone holding a machete. The incident occurred on Friday evening in Eyrecourt in Galway.

According to Galway Bay FM, at approximately 9:45pm on Friday, a group of people started using weapons to smash car windows. A 26-year-old woman was in one of the cars and sustained injuries from a machete.

She was taken to hospital in Ballinasloe where her injuries are being described as serious but not life-threatening.

Gardaí are said to be surveying CCTV in the area to understand what happened and to identify anyone involved. A meeting has also taken place in the local community, where people are said to be in shock.

Local Fianna Fail TD Anne Rabbitte told Galway Bay FM:

“It was a very highly emotive meeting that took place in Eyrecourt.

The community felt so upset about it that they had to hold a public meeting because they lived in fear on that night in Eyrecourt, because they were afraid to walk down their street, they were told to stay inside doors, they didn’t know what was going on.”
