Woman arrested in murder investigation after a child dies in Belfast

A murder investigation has been launched after the tragic death of a child in Belfast.

It is believed the child was stabbed at a house in the Brompton Park area of North Belfast on Tuesday night.

Police stated that they have made one arrest in relation to the case. The woman remains in police custody.

The PSNI stated: “Police have commenced a murder investigation following the death of a child in the Brompton Park area of north Belfast this evening and made one arrest in relation to this.”

“The investigation is at an early stage and further information will be provided in due course.”

Emergency services were called to the house on Tuesday, July 27. Two children were reportedly stabbed and were rushed to hospital.

One of the children sadly passed away in hospital.

The other child remains in hospital and is being treated for their injuries.

Speaking about the harrowing incident, Sinn Féin MP John Finucane said it was a tragic incident. He extended his thoughts to the people involved in the incident.

“Our thoughts are with all those involved. I again appeal to everyone to be mindful & not to post or share anything which would add further distress.”

The investigation is ongoing.
