The wording for what will replace the Eighth Amendment if the upcoming referendum passes has been agreed on.
Cabinet decided this morning that a yes vote would remove Article 40.3.3 from the Irish constitution and replace it with: “Provision may be made by law for the regulation of termination of pregnancies.”
It is not yet known what the exact wording of the referendum itself will be.
RTE reports that the cabinet approved the referendum bill early today.
Minister for Health Simon Harris said that on International Women’s Day, he was “… thinking of the women who’ve had the courage to tell their very personal stories about their own private life.”
He said the day was “… marked by our Government taking a significant step forward in putting a proposal to the people that will ensure safe and legal access to care and support to women in crisis pregnancy situations.”
“If you want to change the way we treat women who have to leave our shores in their thousands, we need to repeal the Eighth Amendment.”
The referendum on the Eighth Amendment will take place at the end of May.
