Kate Hudson on why she is taking a ‘genderless approach’ to raising her daughter

Kate Hudson has explained that she is going to be taking a “genderless” approach to raising her daughter, Rani Rose.

The Almost Famous actress and her boyfriend, Danny Fujikawa, welcomed their little girl in October last year. Rani joins her two older brothers from her mum’s previous relationships: Bingham Hawn, 7½, and Ryder Russell, 15.

In an interview with AOL, the actress explained that while having a daughter didn’t change her parenting approach, there was “definitely a difference.”

She said:

“I think you just raise your kids individually regardless – like a genderless [approach]. We still don’t know what she’s going to identify as.

“I will say that, right now, she is incredibly feminine in her energy, her sounds and her way. It’s very different from the boys, and it’s really fun to actually want to buy kids’ clothes.

“With the boys it was just like onesies … actually, I did pretty good with the boys.

“But with her it’s a whole other ball game. There’s some stuff that I’m like, ‘I can’t do that to her, because it’s so over-the-top.'”

The 39-year-old went on to explain how growing up with brothers – Oliver Hudson, Wyatt Russell and Boston Russell – helped her see how fluid gender roles were.

She continued:

“I was a tomboy in a spinning dress. My middle brother, [Boston,] who is closest to me in age, was basically my sister because I put makeup on him all the time, and I’d dress him up and he loved it.

“But growing up as a girl with all boys, you end up with a thick skin. You really do. People say, ‘Oh, your brothers must’ve really protected you.’ And I’m like, ‘They threw me right into the fire!'”

The proud parents announced the arrival of their “little rosebud” on social media, with Hudson sharing a series of sweet snaps.

The first simple-but-sweet post began with the date the newborn was born – 10-2-18 – while the post itself was captioned: “She’s here.”

She went on to reveal her little girl’s name, as well as the incredibly sweet inspiration behind it.

The second photo said, “Welcome Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa.”

She continued:

“We have decided to name our daughter Rani (pronounced Ronnie) after her grandfather, Ron Fujikawa,” Kate said.

“Ron was the most special man who we all miss dearly. To name her after him is an honour.

“Everyone is doing well and happy as can be. Our family thanks you for all the love and blessing that have been sent our way and we send ours right back.”

A few days later, that was followed up with the first glimpse of their adorable little girl.

The photo shows little Rani Rose snuggled up in a blue and red striped blanket, fast asleep. She also was wearing a cute pink hat with a bow.
