Remember to ‘close before you doze’, warns expert
Instinct might tell us to leave our kids’ doors ajar so we can hear them or get to them easier during the night, but Dr. Free. N. Hess, a pediatric emergency doctor popular on TikTok has warned parents to close their children’s bedroom doors at night to help keep them safe.
Her first video lists some pretty compelling reasons to shut doors at night.
“Keeping the doors closed decreases the amount of carbon dioxide that gets into the bedroom when there’s a fire.
“It decreases the heat that’s in the room and increases the amount of oxygen, which therefore increases the chance of survival and the time you have until rescue.”
If that wasn’t convincing enough, she posted a second video that showed an image of a home badly damaged by fire.
One of the rooms on show has been ravaged by fire because the door was left open. The second bedroom appears to be untouched because, according to Hess, the door had been closed.
The video is called, ‘Which Room Do You Want Your Kids In If There Was a Fire?’ and I think we all know the answer to that.
Thankfully, the house fire in the images was created to test the theory, and no one was injured during the experiment.
I, for one, am a little shaken by this.
Consider my doors firmly shut going forward.
