Why is it that ‘bring your child to work day’ hardly exists in Ireland?
When I was a kid I remember watching American TV shows featuring episodes where parents annually bring their children to their workplace.
On this side of the Atlantic I only know of one person whose company partakes in the tradition.
Ireland is pretty laid back when it comes to a lot of things so it is strange that casually bringing your child to work has never caught on.
Maybe a big part of it is that for many people there is no causally about it.
As I said above I watched a lot of TV shows where the premise of the episode was children being brought to their parent’s job. This generally ended in chaos.
Bring your child to work day might be handy if your workplace has recreational rooms and a huge cafeteria.
If you work in a supermarket or a fast food restaurant I don’t really know how the whole concept would work on a practical level.
Maybe if it was like bring your child to work for an hour and show them around day instead.
While now I work in an office that wouldn’t be a huge hazard that hasn’t always been the case.
Three years ago I used to work in a medical lab filled with dangerous chemicals and syringes so if I were to bring my child in they would have had to go in a bubble.
I do think it’s a good idea for parents to be able to show their children where they work but there are definitely kinks to work out of the concept.
A little over a year ago the IT company that my husband works for allowed employees to bring in their children for the day.
My son went in and told me afterwards that he had the best day ever. Turned out they had spent most of their time making trips to the canteen.
I think the idea has a good basis, especially for parents who work full time and miss out on spending time with their children. Still it needs a little tweaking to pan out in reality and not end up like a comedy sketch show.
