Couple banned from naming child ‘Prince William’

Katie Mythen-Lynch

A French court has ruled that a couple cannot name their baby son Prince William.

The couple, from Perpignan in the south of the country, argued that naming the child after a member of the British royal family could help him later in life. Luckily France’s civil code allows judges to step in at the naming stage and overrule the parents ‘in the interests of the child’.

Officials believed the name Prince William would put the child at risk of a ‘lifetime of mockery’.

Undeterred, the couple tried again when their daughter was born – this time choosing the moniker Mini Cooper. French officials once again turned them down.

Amazingly, Prince William and Mini Cooper were not the oddest names the French authorities had to quash – a couple from Valenciennes in northern France attempted to name their baby girl Nutella, while another couple was banned from calling their daughter Strawberry.

What do you think, should authorities step in to prevent parents from choosing unusual baby names? Let us know on Twitter @HerFamilydotie.
