“Tired kids on Christmas Day can spoil the fun for everyone – themselves most importantly,” according to Vasilii Kiselev, CEO and co-founder of Legacy Online School.
“They’ve been looking forward to Christmas for weeks, and then the day itself gets spoiled by stress and a bad night’s sleep on Christmas Eve.
“Thankfully, there are simple, proven things adults can do to prevent this.”
Here’s how to keep children calm, manage their excitement, and ensure they get a good night’s sleep before the big day:
Limit Screen Time
Reduce exposure to gadgets and screens at least an hour before bedtime.
The blue light emitted by devices disrupts sleep patterns, and stimulating content can make it harder for kids to wind down.
Instead, distract them with engaging activities that don’t involve screens, such as playing a quiet game or reading a festive story.
Establish a Calming Bedtime Routine
Stick to a familiar bedtime routine to help kids relax. Include calming activities like a warm bath, brushing teeth, and reading.
If possible, start the routine 30 minutes earlier than usual to account for the extra excitement.

“Healthy sleep routines for children during the holidays can make or break their experience,” Kiselev says.
“Structured, calming bedtime routines reduce stress and improve sleep quality, especially on a night as exciting as Christmas Eve.
“Sleep is the foundation of how we feel and how we interact with each other.”
For families struggling to balance the magic of Christmas with the need for rest, Kiselev emphasises creativity and consistency.
“Turn off TVs and devices early, but distract your kids with fun alternatives like games or storytelling.
“Even older kids, who may be less amenable to bedtime routines, can benefit from small adjustments. The more of these tips you apply, the better rested your family will be.”
