Controversial punishment: Is this parent’s tactic motivational or just mean?

How would you grade this punishment?

Sive O'Brien

We can’t decide if this punishment is creative or just a bit cruel, but it’s definitely got people talking.

Posting a photo of their daughter’s mobile phone inside a glass frame to Reddit, the parent wrote, “My daughter is currently pulling a D- in math. This is her phone.” The message underneath the framed phone reads, “In case of ‘B’ break glass.”

Currently, the photo has received almost 1,000 comments, but the course of action seems to have provoked a Marmite effect, with people either loving or hating the idea.

Reactions AGAINST include:

  • “So…take phone away rather than help her? Parenting: D -.”
  • “Parenting done wrong.”
  • “Reward for the effort for the grades, not the grades themselves.”

Reactions FOR include:

  • “Fine parenting in progress.”
  • “That’s grade ‘A’ parenting.”
  • “Perhaps the the girl is doing poorly in math because she isn’t paying attention and is playing on her phone.”

The last comment makes a good point – we don’t know the full story. Maybe the daughter just needed motivation to get back on track; or, maybe the parent was being too harsh and she needed help rather than punishment. Whatever the story, we wonder if the tactic worked.
