John Legend and I have something in common, we both need swimming lessons

Recently I found out that John Legend and I share something very similar.

No, it's not that we're both minted, if only. We both fall into the category of parents who need to learn how to swim. I've always had a love/hate relationship with water. I love going to swimming pools or the ocean but the thought of swimming sends me into a panic. When I was very little I fell into the deep end of a swimming pool and ever since I've been terrified of doing anything other than standing in a pool. Learning to swim has been on my to-do list for years but I keep putting it off. It wasn't really until I had kids and they asked me to teach them to swim that I realised how big a problem it was. However, it would seem I'm not the only parent dealing with this issue. Singer John Legend tweeted this week that he has just begun swimming lessons himself.

I can't really swim. Today I took my first swim lesson since I was like 5. My dad learned in his 60's so I feel like I'm ahead of schedule.

The father-of-two spoke openly about the fact that he was in no way a strong swimmer and hadn't taken a lesson since he was a child. During the twitter thread, he told fans that his kids were already flying with their lessons. Even though his children might be out lapping him he did say he was ahead of the game in his family as his dad didn't learn until he was in his sixties. I definitely don't want to wait until I'm collecting my pension before I can go diving into a pool with my kids. Swimming is an important life skill that I want them to know and I should lead by example. I know we're into February now but I think I'll have to make 'learning to swim' my resolution for 2019.
