Motor Mouth: HerFamily.ie Editor Sive O’Brien test drives the new Mitsubishi Outlander

"Big, powerful and super-smooth on the road... but that was just for starters"

Sive O'Brien

THE MOTOR The Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2DI-D 2WD Intense 5-seater.

THE BUZZ This is the new entry model of the Outlander SUV range, which means it’s the perfect car for a family like ours: two parents, two children. First impressions? It’s big, powerful and super-smooth on the road but that was just for starters: the car seats were so easy to fit, with plenty of room for me and my husband to bend and manoeuvre around the back seats to make sure they were fitted correctly. This might not sound like a big plus to you, but if you have ever had to do this frustrating task, you’ll know all about how tricky (and time-consuming) it can be. We loved the roominess – oodles of leg room for us and the little ones, and then there’s the boot – it’s the stuff of dreams; we could fit double the amount of kitchen-sink-type paraphernalia we usually cram into our car when we head West on holidays.

WHAT THE KIDS LOVED The height, they loved being “upstairs” which means nice and high up with a great view of the road ahead of them so they don’t have to always look to the side. But best of all was the touch screen audio system or “the TV” as they called it. Changing the radio stations (repeatedly) for the little music critics was a breeze.

WHAT I LOVED The rear parking sensors and rear view camera were brilliant, especially if you’re not used to driving a big car. And the €270 road tax is not to be sniffed at, either.

HOW MUCH? Prices start at €29,950.
