New tool tells you the popularity of your baby name for every decade since 1890

Sive O'Brien

The popularity of your name is probably a lot different now than it was the year you were born.

That’s because baby name trends change considerably over time; names that were hugely popular years ago might not even be on the radar nowadays.

Using new data showing the most popular baby names in the US in 2014, an interactive tool on Time will tell you which name had the same popularity in the past year and every decade since 1890 – the year data was first collected – as yours did the year you were born.

Confused? Basically, it works by comparing your name’s rank to the same rank in different decades. You can also find out what your child’s name would have been if they were born today, or 50 years ago. It might even provide some inspiration for anyone who is trying to decide on a baby name at the moment.
