The ultimate family day out at the races? Here’s how to plan it…

6 ways to make a day at the races family friendly

Sive O'Brien

Looking for an activity that will keep the WHOLE family entertained this Easter? A day at the races with the children is a family day out with a difference. Here’s how to make it work…

1. Weatherproof

Be prepared for all weather eventualities by packing a high SPF sunscreen, as well as waterproof gear.

2. Locate the loos

It’s ALWAYS good to know where your nearest toilet is, especially when you’ve got kids in tow.

3. Make a meeting point

Hopefully nobody will get lost, but deciding on a safe place to meet if you get separated is a sensible plan. A child ID bracelet for young children may also help you to be quickly reunited.

4. Opt for comfort over chic

The style stakes won’t be high for a family day out at the races so you don’t have to worry about dressing to impress. This doesn’t mean you can’t be smart but think flats over heels.

5. Keep them busy

Your children won’t enjoy the horse racing as much as you might, but check out what family-friendly activities are going on at the racecourse ahead of your arrival so you’ll know exactly where to head.

6. Have fun

You may not back a winner, but the best bit of the day will be getting to spend time together as a family.

Fairyhouse Racecourse in Ratoath Co. Meath will host its Family Fun Day on Tuesday April 7. All activities, including the funfair, bouncy castles, face painting, pony rides and the Little Hoofs Show will be free of charge.
