WATCH: Kids are asked about same-sex marriage. Their responses are brilliant

Sive O'Brien

Following the historic Supreme Court ruling in the US last week, late-night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel sent a camera crew out on the street to ask kids what they know about same-sex marriage.

Some of the answers were funny, some of them thoughtful, but all of them brilliant. Our favourite, however, was that given by a young boy who responded to the question ‘when should two people get married’ with, “In the afternoon.” Genius.

A caption that ran underneath the video on YouTube read, “The Supreme Court’s recent decision in favour of same sex marriage has been controversial. One of the most common arguments you hear from those who oppose it is, “How do I explain this to my kids?” Some people wonder if children are sophisticated enough to wrap their heads around something like this, so we went out on the street to ask kids what they think and know about same sex marriage.”

We think the brilliant responses featured in the video below disprove critics’ ‘fears’ of explaining marriage equality to children.

Ahead of Ireland’s Yes vote in May, our Office Mum diarist spoke about she explained the Marriage Equality referendum to her children. You can read her piece about it, here.
